About Anne Sheffield
As a writer whose subject is depression, people often assume that I am
a psychiatrist or psychologist, but in fact my credentials in the field of
depressive illness are that I grew up under the aegis of a depressed mother,
and that both my daughter and I also suffer from depression. This triple
whammy has forced upon me multiple insights about what it's like to be
depressed, and also how disheartening it is to be on the receiving end of
someone else's depression-driven behavior. Over time I have come to the
realization that this illness is far more disabling and dangerous than
thought by sufferers and non-sufferers alike.
Knowledge is power. The more you know about depression
- whether someone else's or your own - the better equipped you will be to
short-circuit its impact on your life. My goal is to help you understand two
basic truths about all depressive illness: first, that those in its grip
almost always falsely attribute their negative outlook on life to outside
causes, not to what really ails them, and second, that friends and family
members are equally unaware of the true dynamic at work. Unless you take
charge, there will be a communication meltdown, accompanied by growing mutual
resentment and unhappiness. Your challenge is to use the information and
coping strategies offered on this website and in my books to keep your love
and your relationship intact until professional treatment for the depression
comes to its permanent rescue.
